A good definition for ‘addiction’
Versione italiana qui.
Drugs of abuse can therefore impose themselves on our activities and instil in us routines that come to seem as fundamental as those we have acquired from our earliest childhood. Having breakfast in the morning, defecating after breakfast, cleaning our teeth in the evening – these are all behaviors that may have been with us since before we can remember, that in a way seem part of us and would leave a sense of incompletion and unease if they were suddenly forbidden. In the same way, drug use takes on this feeling of interiority, a sense of intrinsically belonging to us. Stopping drug misuse when the habit is acquired leaves not just a vacuum in terms of occupation and entertainment, but an inner vacuum in one’s sense of self.
